Meet the Team:  Justin Spinelli

I have asked each of the supported riders to pen a bit of text about themselves in order that the sponsors and friends of the team be better familiarized with the program at large.

Ours is really less of a program and more of a family, a troupe, if you will. We are blessed each year to have such a cohesive group of dedicated athletes who can call each other friends the entire season. I believe the success of our group is not so much due to the wins and results; we have the best people making up the best team, and it shows at every venue we descend upon.

Justin Spinelli is one of those reasons. In his words:

My name is Justin Spinelli. I was born in Portland,Oregon on 8/31/79. I moved to New Hampshire at the age of four and grew up in Nashua, New Hampshire.

My interest in bicycles grew at the age of 13 and by the spring of 1993 I saved up enough money to buy my first real bike - a Cannondale M400 mountain bike that coat $399.99. I rode just for the fun of it until 1997 when I entered my first mountain bike race and won.

Working at Goodale's Bike Shop after school and during the summers I was able to afford myself entry fees and equipment with plenty of time off on the weekends to race. By the summer of 1998 I was receiving enough support from NECSA/Richard Sachs to race full time and stay off my feet in the afternoons.

This move proved to be a good one because the extra bit of support and rest sent me right to the top of the U-23's in the Tour de Toona stage race and landed my a spot on the US National Team. Later that fall I was the first North American finisher at the U-23 World Championship Road Race in Valkenburg, Holland.

After racing stagiere for Team Mercury in 1999, I signed my first Pro contract in 2000 with Team Farm Frites at the age of 20. Two weeks later I was racing in the Tour of Italy with the likes of Marco Pantani and Mario Cipollini!

My potential landed me an even bigger Pro contract with Saeco in 2001, and my results that season kept me there through 2002. After disagreeing with the European Pro cycling mentality, I returned to the states and had a lackluster year at Team Navigators in 2003.

After 2003 I said enough was enough and left cycling to pursue my education in Industial Design. It only took me about two months and I was pedaling a bike again, and by the summer of 2004 I was going to the local MTB races just for fun.

That fall, richard sachs went out of his way to give me a shot on his cyclocross team. after coming a close second to National Champion Mark McCormack in my first race back, I was right back at it and very happy to be racing again.

The following season saw my return to the road racing as an amateur for Target Training.

In 2006 I returned as a Pro for Team Nerac/OLP and just won my first Professional Road Race at the Hills of Housatonic yesterday. I am already looking forward to racing cyclocross for Team Richard Sachs as it is perhaps my favorite thing in the world to do.

Justin has been an RS rider since the late 90s and he is still young at age 26. He has travelled the world racing for the US National Team as well as various Euro squads as described above. He is in his third season back in the peloton after taking that need break from racing so much during the U23 years. We are all pleased that his comeback is going superbly and look forward to many, many podium spots from Justin once September rolls around.
